Peninsula Compleat Angler Fishing Report 08/06/2017

June 9, 2017

The final long weekend for the first half of the year is here – Queen’s birthday.  And whilst the top temperatures look to only hit 15 degrees (which might please the skiers out there) it is going to be a windless few days – a great opportunity to explore winter fishing options on the peninsula.

So first up, I thought I’d give a mention to surf fishing, which tends to command a lot of attention through late May, June and July.  It has been a bumper start to the season with some big hauls of quality salmon coming from our local back beaches and in particular Gunnamatta.

We would love it if you take the time to either email us ( or sms your fishing stories to include in this report 0421 359 022!

On the peninsula we don’t see a lot of salmon bigger than the 3-4kg mark and yet we have had schools of fish in this class over the last few weeks.  It’s provided some exciting opportunities for those bait fishing – but in particular, those fishing lighter spin rods where it is huge amounts of fun to hook into one of these big, acrobatic sambos.  If you have not tried it – I would highly recommend getting yourself a 902 Graphite rod, a bunch of metals and see the sort of exciting action you can have on the beach in winter!

Carl Gustafson and mate Doug had a ripping session at Gunnamatta, bagging a huge number of salmon in some hot action spinning lures.

Check out the info on our Supa Salmon Comp 2017 which we will be running in store until July 31st 2017…. A great prize for the winner – and all you have to do is weigh a fish at the store!  See details at the end of the report.

For those interested in the game scene – it has been an exciting few weeks with some big Tuna appearing in our local waterways.  To be honest this has been kept reasonably quiet for a few weeks now, but great to see a few of the boys into them.  Good bait has presented off Flinders, Cape Schanck and Barwon Heads, all of which have produced fish.  Finding the better quality water has been a key to the process.  The fishing off the peninsula these last few years has truly been amazing.

Baz Gorman with one of the big beasts from our local waters.  Congrats to all the boys who have nailed fish over the last couple of weeks!

For those who don’t want to fluff around on the water during winter and simply want to get out and get a feed it has been great to see a plethora of good size calamari over the last few weeks, including what we would generally consider ‘big breeding squid’.  Portsea, Queenscliff and the Lonsdale Bight and the southern reaches of Westernport have seen the biggest models, however, there have been good squid off the local grounds at Sorrento and Rye too.  This is a great option if you want to get the kids out for a few hours over the long weekend.

Matty Luscombe and Jay Furniss with some lovely local cala.

Benny Broomfield nailing them off Rye.

Ronald McDonald goes fishing.

Steve from Compleat Angler Ringwood had a great session down at Portsea pier, getting amongst some nice cala.

On the other side of the peninsula, in Westernport, Chris Cassar has been finding some monster squid.  No doubt there are some big breeders about at the moment!

Unbelievable quality to these squid.  Good job Chris and Co.!

Our mate Gawaine Blake has been out hunting gumbos recently, finding some good quality specimens over in Westernport.

You can also upload fishing pics to our Quick Reports section on our website here

We would also like to make special mention of Nick Lazarevski and his son Daniel.  Nick and Daniel are friends of the shop spending their summers on the peninsula and frequenting the store.  The guys love their game fishing and have managed to achieve something very special – a World Record for young Daniel.  Personally, I don’t know many world record holders – in fact Daniel is the first – I am sure most of you are in the same boat so you can understand how amazing this is.

Daniel Lazarevski Small Fry World Record holder for a 116kg Bluefin Tuna.  Wow!  The fish also broke another record of longest standing SBT to be recpatured after tagging - some 25 years later

Trent North has been enjoying trips to his caravan at Mulwala, getting stuck into ripping murray cod.  Nice fat one there Trento!

Out of town, some of our local boys have been doing the run down to Portland for good results.  It is a pretty busy time of year down there and there have been good numbers of schoolies along with a few big fish mixed in.  With that said we have had tuna action right up the coast including at Apollo bay and in our local waters.

Tim Fyffe and the boys did a quick dash to Portland catching plenty of schoolies - smiles all round, plenty of sashimi coming home!

Local boy Matt Garrett with his own bunch of schoolies at Portland.

Finally, it is June and consequently the end of the financial year – we have quite a few specials on reels and other items we want to clear-out before June 30th – so drop in, say g’day and see if anything tickles your fancy!

For more information feel free to drop in and see us at Peninsula Compleat Angler, 11 Boneo Rd in Rosebud, Victoria. Ph: 03 5981 1994.

Keep it fishy,
