Peninsula Fishing Report December 03/12/2019
Welcome back anglers, after some time off from writing due to lack of fishing reports we are finally back on track. Even though the weather over the past weeks has been a bit grim especially through November it certainly didn’t stopped too many from getting out and making the most of it, This week hasn’t had the best start either and it seems the rest of this week isn’t going to be too good either but reports of fish are still coming in.
Mount Martha to Dromana.
As it stands the snapper fishing is definitely the main focus for most fisho’s at the moment, this season has so far been really good up the northern end right along the 18 meter line down to Carrum where boaters have been having an extremely good snapper season. Mid November really started picking up on our end though, and these reports have been very consistent since, with a mixed size range of fish from 2kg to 6kg and from depths of 12 meters to 20 meters. Baits of choice have been mixed amongst anglers but Pilchards and fresh squid have been the stand out baits.
Scott Sommer had a ripper day on the water late last week. He and mates Kyle and Matt managed over 13 fish fishing in about 14 meters between Mount Martha and Mornington.
Scott Sommer.
Kyle.
Matt hooked up to a nice fish.
On another session Kyle got this fish further up the bay towards Seaford.
An excellent catch from Tim during a session off Mount Martha, plenty of fish coming in out of 18 meters.
Rosebud.
The weed beds off Rosebud have been producing plenty of squid just beyond the yellow markers, at times there has been some good catches of whiting around these same areas as well as heading towards Tootgarook.
In the Shallows between Rosebud and Capel Sound at night Garfish can be found and they make for a welcome catch to any dinner table. A few local guys have been netting them by hand.
Local Angler Gaz Caught these flathead straight off Rosebud.
Rye.
Charter operator Joe Farr has been killing it lately on the Whiting, if your looking for the best on the peninsula give Joe a call on 0488 229 752 for bookings. A day on the water with Joe is a sure thing.
Hooked up right on sunrise.
Gummy shark have been a fairly common by-catch fishing for snapper out the back of Rye deep, a few customers have reported some very good catches, all of which have been on either snapper snatchers or equivalent and snapper snacks.
A nice addition to the esky. This gummy hit a Black magic 5/0 snapper snack in chartreuse.
David Locke caught this nice gumbo land-based.
Blairgowrie, Sorrento and Portsea.
Sorrento has been fishing well both land-based and from the boat, A number of really good size calamari have been caught during the day just off the piers, in the evenings there are heaps of smaller bait fish which seem to be attracting some larger specimens in, and also plenty of yakka’s and mackerel are hanging about.
Staff Jules fished with mate Bernie who caught a few nice calamari all around this size.
The boys were around to help a fellow angler landed this absolute monster, Well done John a great catch.
Emma Sommer caught this one lurking behind a school of bait fish at Sorrento.
A few weeks back a couple of the boys from the Southern Peninsula angling Club got onto a solid school of salmon, they were trolling them up amongst the moorings. Reports of salmon around Blairgowrie are still coming in too.
Brady.
Seal 1, Benny 0. Sometimes the house wins.
A good mixed bag caught by Benny and Brady.
Surf beaches and Offshore.
The Surf beaches still seem to be fishing well for Salmon even though its getting later in the season for them. Gunamatta has been producing some bigger fish at times but mostly good school size fish in big numbers.
Bernie from Southern Peninsula Angling Club caught these salmon around sunset a few weeks back.
Offshore there has been some excitement amongst a couple of local anglers, Dan and Hayley got onto one of the biggest Gummy sharks I think we’ve seen, This fish would have to be over the 30kg mark! Well done guys, an amazing fish.
Staff Scotty got offshore for a cray dive… Remember to contact fisheries for cray tags if you haven’t already.
