Peninsula Fishing Report December 03/12/2019

Welcome back anglers, after some time off from writing due to lack of fishing reports we are finally back on track. Even though the weather over the past weeks has been a bit grim especially through  November it certainly didn’t stopped too many from getting out and making the most of it, This week hasn’t had the best start either and it seems the rest of this week isn’t going to be too good either but reports of fish are still coming in.

Mount Martha to Dromana.

As it stands the snapper fishing is definitely the main focus for most fisho’s at the moment, this season has so far been really good up the northern end right along the 18 meter line down to Carrum where boaters have been having an extremely good snapper season. Mid November really started picking up on our end  though, and these reports have been very consistent since, with a mixed size range of fish from 2kg to 6kg and from depths of 12 meters to 20 meters. Baits of choice have been mixed amongst anglers but Pilchards and fresh squid have been the stand out baits.

Scott Sommer had a ripper day on the water late last week. He and mates Kyle and Matt managed over 13 fish fishing in about 14 meters between Mount Martha and Mornington.

Scott Sommer.

Kyle.

Matt hooked up to a nice fish.

On another session Kyle got this fish further up the bay towards Seaford.

An excellent catch from Tim during a session off Mount Martha, plenty of fish coming in out of 18 meters.

Rosebud.

The weed beds off Rosebud have been producing plenty of squid just beyond the yellow markers, at times there has been some good catches of whiting around these same areas as well as heading towards Tootgarook.

In the Shallows between Rosebud and Capel Sound at night Garfish can be found and they make for a welcome catch to any dinner table. A few local guys have been netting them by hand.

Local Angler Gaz Caught these flathead straight off Rosebud.

Rye.

Charter operator Joe Farr has been killing it lately on the Whiting, if your looking for the best on the peninsula give Joe a call on 0488 229 752 for bookings. A day on the water with Joe is a sure thing.

Hooked up right on sunrise.

Gummy shark have been a fairly common by-catch fishing for snapper out the back of Rye deep, a few customers have reported some very good catches, all of which have been on either snapper snatchers or equivalent and  snapper snacks.

A nice addition to the esky. This gummy hit a Black magic 5/0 snapper snack in chartreuse.

David Locke caught this nice gumbo land-based.

Blairgowrie, Sorrento and Portsea.

Sorrento has been fishing well both land-based and from the boat, A number of really good size calamari have been caught during the day just off the piers, in the evenings there are heaps of smaller bait fish which seem to be attracting some larger specimens in, and also plenty of yakka’s and mackerel are hanging about.

Staff Jules fished with mate Bernie who caught a few nice calamari all around this size.

The boys were around to help a fellow angler landed this absolute monster, Well done John a great catch.

Emma Sommer caught this one lurking behind a school of bait fish at Sorrento.

A few weeks back a couple of the boys from the Southern Peninsula angling Club got onto a solid school of salmon, they were trolling them up amongst the moorings. Reports of salmon around Blairgowrie are still coming in too.

Brady.

Seal 1, Benny 0. Sometimes the house wins.

A good mixed bag caught by Benny and Brady.

Surf beaches and Offshore.

The Surf beaches still seem to be fishing well for Salmon even though its getting later in the season for them. Gunamatta has been producing some bigger fish at times but mostly good school size fish in big numbers.

Bernie from Southern Peninsula Angling Club caught these salmon around sunset a few weeks back.

Offshore there has been some excitement amongst a couple of local anglers, Dan and Hayley got onto one of the biggest Gummy sharks I think we’ve seen, This fish would have to be over the 30kg mark! Well done guys, an amazing fish.

Staff Scotty got offshore for a cray dive… Remember to contact fisheries for cray tags if you haven’t already.

Peninsula Fishing Report September 03/09/2019

Fishing Report Monday 26th August 2019

Well the weather this last couple weeks has certainly shown its true colours. The wind and rain we have had has been making it quiet hard to get out, Hence our report is a week late this time round. Never the less we are now in spring and the new season should start to bring better weather.

We are coming back into Snapper season and soon it won’t be long till the reds start firing around Mount Martha, time to dust off all the gear guys and get your boats ready…. Looks like its going to be a red hot season.

Rosebud.

For everyone who knows what Rosebud is like in a big blow knows how dirty and rough it gets out the front! This aside on the calmer days anglers have been getting some nice school whiting a few hundred meters from the pier and there have been salmon working the shallows around the jetty on the rougher days.

Calamari have been fishing well the last couple of weeks while the squid have been hot on red foil jigs, white and orange colours have been a big mention also.

Here’s a few jigs that have been a real hit.

Braving the cold, angler Shawn hooked a nice feed of flake off the Jetty.

Rye.

The whiting have been a big hit amongst our local fisho’s, We have had excellent reports this last week of fish being caught from Rye to Sorrento.

Locals Mick and Jay fished around Rye on Friday, and what a day it was! The boys managed a ripper mixed bag of whiting and squid.

Jay Furniss.

Mick Brittain.

A good haul of ting’s boys! Well done.

Blairgowrie/Sorrento/Portsea.

As some you will have already seen, there has been a large school of salmon working the shallows between the marina and Sorrento. We have had many good reports of fish being caught in the morning and during the afternoon on soft plastics and small metals.

Staff Jules and his better half Emma fished Blairgowrie on Friday evening. Emma hooked this salmon on a pencil bait.

David Locke doing some bait collection for an up coming gummy trip.

David also got a good feed of Calamari.

Blairgowrie Marina is still the go-to spot if your looking for calamari, boaters have been getting on-to good numbers amongst the moorings again, while the sisters has been firing up for whiting and squid if your on the drift.

Customer Locky said he got busted off on a thumper salmon and then landed this unusual looking guy…. A Stargazer on a pencil bait!

Sorrento Pier has been a little quiet, we have had word of a few big squid that got caught late last week, so they are around. Fishing for gars as we come further into spring will be a good target for fisho’s off the pier. We do tend to see a few more fish show up around this period and stay right through the summer. Keep in mind plenty of burley is your key, you just have to draw them out of the moorings.

The week before last, a few customers were doing very well on the gummy sharks around Portsea and up the Simmonds Channel fishing the run in tide. Most of these fish were reported to be between 10 and 16kg.

Surf Beaches.

The week before last on the full moon we had Staff Jules and good customer James decide to fish Gunnamatta. The boys fished quite late and managed to get some really good size salmon. A little unusual to catch at night but is does happen.

James even cracked a double header on one cast!

James and his mate Justin turned the salmon into this nice specimen. Well done boys!

On another note the offshore fishing will start back up soon, fishing the reefs out from Barwon heads back to Point Nepean side of Port Phillip. Generally you’ll find good quality snapper in these areas, while fishing further out on the 35 to 45 meter lines gummy shark and flathead are a popular target.

Peninsula Fishing Report August 09/08/2019

G’day anglers and welcome to our new page!

After quiet some time we are back into writing fishing reports and we will be adding new content every fortnight to get everyone back up to date with all our local fishing news on the Mornington Peninsula.

Please check out both our Fishing Tips page and Reports page, to get up to date with all the latest catches and ways to either improve your fishing knowledge or just get in on the action!

We have had a lot of changes over the past year in the store with new management taking over and a little refitting of the shop. We just passed our 1st year and would like to thank everyone who has supported us during this period.

We are looking forward to seeing and hearing everyone’s fishing stories and pics so please make sure to send them through to 0448 048 872 just remember to add your name and a brief report for us to feature you in either our store report or the fishing monthly magazine.

Now to play catch up on whats been happening over the last few weeks as we have had a heap of mixed reports.

Mount Martha.

We have had a lot of land-based reports from fisho’s catching a number of pinkies and snapper from the rock groins and the rocks around Bradford Rd and up toward Martha shops.

There are still squid being caught land-based, Hearn Road has been a common mention for good numbers using smaller and brighter colour jigs for the best results.

Check out this cracker haul… a 3 kg, 2.5 kg and a silver trevally that weighed over 1.2 kg!

Boaters have also been cleaning up on the squid in between Safety Beach and Mt. Martha fishing in around 4-5 meters of water only a few hundred meter from shore.

Plenty of Flathead can be caught straight out from the boat ramp towards the mussel farm, fishing soft plastics has seen a good response for some slightly larger specimens.

A few local boaters have shared their reports of good Snapper being caught from the fairway and back towards Mornington fishing anywhere from 16 m to 23 meters.

Check out this Red caught by Will, this fish weighed in at 9kg!

Rosebud.

Reports of Salmon during the day have been on and off amongst some of our older customers who have reported large schools under neath the jetty.

Squid at night are a popular target as well as mullet and garfish when they show up during the morning.

Straight out the front of the boat squadron has been producing good numbers of calamari and the occasional bag of whiting for those targeting them.

Rye.

Although we haven’t had a heap of reports from Rye pier the last couple of weeks it has been reasonably productive, late nights we’re seeing mixed bags of squid, mackerel and tommy rough being caught, good numbers of salmon cruising through the shallows in the mornings and even the odd smaller gummy shark has been landed.

Around White Cliffs there are some good weedy grounds fishing well for squid and Flathead and particularly good if you’ve got a smaller boat and want to stay close in to get a feed, the South Channel Pile is always worth a look for a bag of squid and whiting can be caught on the out going tide.

Michelle showing off one of many squid from a successful trip.

Plenty of flatty’s out the front of the pier if you want a quick feed. Further out the channel has been fishing a little tough for some which is to be expected as a number of unwanted species move in during the cooler months but nevertheless we have had some very nice gummy’s caught.

James caught this cracker from spot X, not a bad effort.

Blairgowrie/Sorrento/Portsea.

We are into that time of year where we are seeing plenty of larger Calamari being caught, plenty of anglers have been reporting the morning periods to be particularly good fishing from the piers and amongst the scattered moorings and weed beds in these areas.

A good example of a big spawner.

Blaigowrie has definitely been the go-to for numbers of squid, the best jigs of late are white, various red foils and greens. Baits are working particularly well if you are chasing that big trophy cala!

There are consistent reports of salmon at Blairgowrie now too! Just this week we have had a couple guys in store with reports of fish around 3kg being busted off under the marina wall and fish up to 2kg landed.

Whiting have been more vigorous on the chew lately, plenty of fish are being caught around the Sisters and the middle grounds back towards Blairgowrie.

Local Boys Matty, Ben and Bradey on the money with a fantastic bag on tingas

Portsea has also seen its fair share of fish being caught from around the pier.

It’s a good option for some larger gars although you’ll need to put in a little time, they will come in with a good burley mix.

Other species taken recently have been Trevally and Salmon.

Surf Beaches.

All our back beaches are fishing well, Portsea is still yet to really pick up which we should see happen in the coming weeks however Gunnamatta has been a real winner amongst both the bait and lure anglers.

Staff Scotty snagged this chunky sambo on one of our angry bait metals.

We have had the Occasional report of gummy sharks being caught from Gunna and Rye beaches although the best reports are still coming in from Summers and Point Leo beach. These spots are best fished on the high tide using cuts of salmon, squid or yakka.

Staff Jules with a decent salmon from Gunna.
